Manufacturer: Chassis: Molotov GAZ plant, Gorky, former USSR

History: USSR government approved development of Strela-1 project in September 1960. S-1 was developed by construction bureau for precision techniques KBTM GKOT (OKB-16) in cooperation with CKB "Geofizika" which worked on optics for guidance system. Despite lot of difficulties, first prototype was finished in 1966, and project was successfully concluded in 1967. After state testing, first system become operational in 1968.
First combat use was in May 1981 when Syrian troops fired at Israeli aircraft's over Lebanon. Since then it was used in Angola, Iraq-Iran war, Gulf war and in former Yugoslavia.

Description: System 9K31 Strela-1 is made by launcher vehicle 9P31 and missile 9M31. Vehicle 9P31 was developed from reconnaissance armored car BRDM-2. Driver and commander sits next to each other in the front of the vehicle. For observation each has a window in the front which is closed in combat and periscope is used instead. In the middle of the vehicle is fighting compartment - one-men manually operated turret with four infra-red fire-and-forget 9M31 missiles in ready-to-launch position. One bullet-proof window exist for missile operator. Crew enters or leaves vehicle through roof hatches - on over commander other over driver sits.
