Giuseppe Amico

Biography

Born on 1 November 1890 in Caputa, Caserta region in Italy.

Attended the Academy of Turin and fought World War I.

General Amico was last commander of Catanzaro division which was decimated during British operation Compass in Egypt and later dissolved.

During Italian capitulation in the evening of 11 September gathered a group of like mined anti-German officers and agreed to resist agreed disarmament by Germans on the following day. Germans learning of this decision begun to immediately disarm Italian units and with air support crushed Italian resistance.

General Amico was first taken prisoner during negotiations with Germans but was allowed to speak to soldiers of 56th Infantry Regiment in order to get them to surrender. Instead he joined major Piro in attacking Germans and was captured for the second time.

By German orders, general Amico was shot by Italian fascist lieutenant Lino Domofrija who after that entered NDH police force.
