Nikola Colovic (Colović)

( 1874 – 1939 )

Biography:

Born on 25 June 1874 in Zajecar, graduated from Lower and Higher school of Military academy.

First Balkan war

After battle of Kumanovo as commander of Serbian cavalry regiment from Danube Division I, Colovic pursed units of Ottoman Vardar army along Vardar river. Near Demir Kapija he destroyed one battalion, captured Dorjan and Gevgelija where took 1900 Turkish soldiers as prisoners and on his own initiative reached Salonica on 9 November 1912.

World War I

During Battle of Cer on 16 July as commander of 3rd Cavalry Regiment he destroyed 1st Battalion from 21st Czech Landwerh Division of Austro-Hungarian army commanded by Major General Artur Przyborski. Following day he chased rest of division back across Drina river. On return through village Prnjavor his regiment was surrounded in evening hours but managed to break out and on dawn on 18 July joined Cavalry Division near village Bojic.

During retreat of Serbian army in 1915, Colovic distinguished himself as brigade commander fighting rear guards near village Krnjevo on 22 and 23 October and others. After breakthrough of Salonica front in 1918, his 1st Cavalry Brigade breaks into rear of 1st Bulgarian army near Kocana and chases it to Carevo selo. Later on Morava direction, after successful maneuver near village Lesja on 5 October, pursues units of German 9th Army across Svilajnac all the way to Danube river.

Before and after the war he writes articles about cavalry in army magazine "Ratnik" and as 1st Lieutant he translated book "Konjički juriš kod Somo-Sijera u Španiji" by A.K.Puzirevskog (Belgrade, 1901). Nikola Colovic died on 14 December 1939 in Belgrade.
