Lea Deutsch (Dajč)

(1927 - 1943)

Biography

Lea (Dragica) Deutsch was born in 1927, father Stjepan Deutsch was a lawyer, mother Ivka Singer, brother Saša, family lived in Gundulić street 39 in Zagreb. Her carrier of child wonder started at age of five playing small parts in National theater. Performing next to biggest theaters stars of those days she acted, danced and singed in Croatian National Theatre (HNK) which brought her massive popularity.

With introduction of racial laws in Independent State of Croatia in Autumn of 1941 she was banned from performing and later from school. Despite efforts of numerous people to save her, she was together with her family putt in cattle cart on a train for Auschwitz. Allegedly she passed away before reaching death camp where her mother and brother would perish because of weak heart. Her father was hidden before by doctor Panac while family remained not expecting harm to come to them since they have been baptized to Roman Catholic faith.

On September 1, 2003 elementary Jewish day school was opened in Zagreb, Croatia named Lauder – Lea Deutsch Elementary School.
