Biography

Gambara took over 2nd Army on the day of the Italian capitulation 8 September 1943. Arriving at his headquarters on 9 September he ordered all Italian units to breakthrough towards Rijeka (Fiume) but few managed to carry it out being blocked and disarmed by Yugoslav Partisans.

After meeting with commander of German 194th Regiment from 71st Infantry Division, colonel Kaspar Völker, Gambara agreed to surrender to Germans and decided to stall surrender negotiations with Partisan representatives until German arrival on 14 September.
