Josip Gamberger

( 1894 - 1956 )

Biography

Born on 18 January 1894 in Tuzla, father Josip and mother Terezija, born Hager. Grown up in Petrovaradin with seven brothers Vatrolsav, (Viktor?). In Tuzla he completed four years of primary and four of classical gymnasium, after which went to Cadet school in Kamenica which took another four years.

On 11 December 1919 in Djakovo he married Mickia born Kraljevic on 25 May 1899 u Djakovo, following year on 21 September they had daughter Melita.

Although during war he personally stopped departure of two rail wagons with Jews to Auschwitz and protected his adjutant Petrica Petric from SS prosecution, Josip Gamberger was spared of prosecution after the war and was sentenced to prison term on Goli otok where he died.

In book by Vjenceslav Topalovic, SREDNJA BOSNA – ne zaboravimo HRVATSKE ŽRTVE 1941.-50./1991.-95., Zagreb, 2001., page 67 mentions that Josip Gamberger religion was Hebrew but this is incorrect information since he was always Roman Catholic. Question remains of how did this error turned up and one of possibility is that his religion was changed during post war trials in Yugoslavia by his friends to get him lower sentence.
