Ilija Gojkovic (Gojković)
( 1854 - 1917 )
Biography
Born in Drenovac near Paracin on 2 August 1854. Volunteered to Serbian army in 1870. Fought in Serbian-Turkish war 1877-78, retired in 1901 as Colonel only to be reactivated in 1903.
Fought in First and Second Balkan war and First World War. During Battle of Kumanovo as commander of Morava division repulsed attack of Turkish 7th Corps and prevented outflanking of Serbian army right flank.
Relived of command on 17 November 1914 because of illnes. During retreat of Serbian army commands Timok army during Kacanik maneuver. In 1916 sent to France for medical treatment.
On return voyage to Salonica front, ship carrying him was sunk by German submarine near Sicily. Ilija Gojkovic was killed in life boat because he refused to surrender.
