Ante Gotovina

Biography:

Ante Gotovina was born on 12 October 1955 in Pasman near Zadar. Father Milan, Family soon moved to Pakostane were it still lives today. He has brother Boris and half-brother Branimir.

After completion of his service in French Foreign Legion, Gotovina received French citizenship in April 1979.

During his stay in Colombia he married Colombian journalist Ximena and had a daughter Ximena.

Gotovina returned to Croatia mid 1991 and joined 1st Guard Brigade and was given a task of training new recruits. Soon he moved with brigade to western Slavonia and joined fighting in Novska region were he was wounded.

In 1992 now colonel Gotovina was named commander of Croatian Defense Council (HVO) Municipal headquarters in Livno with task of defense of Livno region. At the end of 1992 brigadier Gotovina replaced general Petar Simac as commander 6th Operational Zone later Split military district.

During operation MASLENICA in January 1993 his first task was to gain control of Zemunik, Skabrnja and secure flanks of 4th Guard Brigade advancing towards Kasic and Paljuv. Gotovina's task was also to organized arrival and deployment of battalion form 3rd Guard which arrived by helicopters from Lucko, Zagreb to Zadar at the critical moment of operation. Also during operation he meet another journalist Vesna Karuza and in March 1994 had another daughter Ana.

In operation WINTER '94-95 he commands his forces plus HVO troops during advance into Glamoc field bring them at behind Knin.

Ante Gotovina got married second time on 29 July 1995 with Croatian army colonel Dunja Zloic with defense minister Gojko Susak and general Ante Roso as witness. Son Ante was born in 1997.

During Operation STORM, Gotovina was in command of sector South.

Together with general of Army of B&H Vahid Karavelic in joint headquarters, Gotovina commanded his troops in operation MAESTRAL and SOUTH MOVE. In March 1996, president Tudjman named him chief inspector of Inspectorate of Croatian army.

On 29 September 2000, Gotovina and six other high ranking officers were retired by president Stjepan Mesic because of open letter criticizing decision of the new government to investigate crimes during Independence war and extradite accused to Hague.

In July 2001, ICTY indicted Ante Gotovina for war crimes committed during Operation STORM. After four years of hiding around World, Gotovina was arrested on 7 December, 2005 by Spanish police and special forces in the resort of Playa de las Americas on Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

Transferred to Hague on 10 December 2005 and appeared before the ICTY on December 12 pleading not guilty to all charges brought against him.
