Andrija Matijas – Pauk (Spider)
( 1947 - 1995 )
Biography:
Born on 31 July 1947 in Pozorac near Marina and Trogir. Married to Nada, no children.
Left Yugoslav People’s Army and joined Croatian army becoming commander of independent company and receiving his baptism of fire on Banija.
From captured tanks formed Armored battalion of Croatian 4th Guard Brigade who’s commander he become on 10 November 1992.
During Operation MASLENICA his battalion destroys Serbian tanks at battle of Kasic. Here he was also wounded while inspecting positions by mortar shell which hit 2-3 meters from him. Despite wounds across entire body and especially legs he left Zadar hospital and rejoined his men on the front.
Following Maslenica, Matijas further strengthens his battalion and after another tour of Sibenik front and two of Zadar leaves his battalion commander post becoming chief of armored units of 4th Guard Brigade.
Year later he become chief of staff and soon after wounding of deputy commander Damir Krsticevic took over command during operation Winter ’94 and Summer ’95 in preparation for Operation STORM before which he officially become brigade deputy commander.
He was killed on 9 October 1995 during Operation Southern Move.
In his honor 4th Guard Brigade received name Pauci - Spiders.
