Milojka Mezzorana Skvaž

Biography

Milojka Mezzorana was born on 7 April 1927 in Rijeka. Her father was Milivoj Mezzorana, professor of English, Italian and French language from Susak and mother pianist Marija (Maženka) Šalat from Prague. Family live in Tomislav street which today is named Milan Smokvina Tvrdi street. After completed primary school she went to the female gymnasium, also learned languages and piano until the war interrupted her education.

Sixteen year old Milojka kept diary she named 'Incasso', first part from 1941 and 1942 she destroyed herself because it had "comments and personal sentimentalities". Preserved remains second part in which she described events after capitulation of Italy, German bombing and occupation of Sušak until her arrest and after she returned from concentration camp her arrest and experiences in camp.

In early 1944 she joined anti-fascist communist youth movement (SKOJ) by writing for Partisan newspapers and posting red posters on the walls during the night. Milojka was arrested by Germans at the doorstep of her home on 14 August 1944 for distribution of Partisan leaflets and taken to Rijeka prison Via Roma for questioning. There she was exposed to humiliation and beating during failed attempts to make her reveal her accomplices. After short stay in Trieste prison Milojka was sent to Auschwitz where she received number 88499, by her testimony she avoided gas chamber five times probably thanks to her knowledge of German language. In early November she was transferred to work in Chemnitz camp near Dresden where she was liberated by Soviet troops in May 1945.

After short stay with her mother's relatives in Prague, Milojka finally returned to Susak on 6 July and gradated in September. She started her studies in Prague but moved to Zagreb in 1948 and gradates at Faculty of Philosophy. For short period worked as secretary in Leksikografski zavod Miroslav Krleza and until early retirement in 1975, she was teaching English language at gymnasium in Sušak. Milojka Mezzorana died on 23 February 2004 and is buried at cemetery in Trsat, Rijeka.
