Milivoje Momcilovic (Momčilović)

( 1876 - 1964 )

Biography:

Born on 26 (not 14?) January 1876 in Belgrade. Married to Angelica, daughter of Sava Nesic, Gendarmerie Lieutenant-Colonel. Had son Sava. Cadet of 26th Class of Lower School of Military Academy. Served in Balkan wars, First and Second World War.

His commanding officer was sick that particular day and he had heard of fighting about 12 miles from his where he and his troops were based. Rather than send reconnaissance he mobilized his forces and arrived in time to reinforce Greek troops fighting Bulgarian and Turkish forces. This turned the tide of the battle and for this he received his decorations.

Momcilovic was taken prisoner during April war in 1941 and sent to German prisoner of war camp Oflag VI-B. In 1950 his son Sava with his family defected to West Berlin and emigrated to Australia.

Until his death on 10 June 1964 in Belgrade, Milivoje lived under house arrest by Yugoslav communist authorities because of his son defection.
