Freddy Nicoll
( 1921? - )
Biography
Joining Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1940 at age of 19, Freddy was sent to Rhodesia for training. His first mission was over Corfu island.
Freddy Nicoll was the first allied pilot to land his damaged Hurricane on newly created airfield on Vis island in Adriatic sea half way to airbases in Italy.
Calling in 'Top Sail! Top Sail!' code for need to land quickly to air control after realizing his Hawker Hurricane is losing fuel fast, after being hit in fuel tank after rocket attack on German warships in PloÄe harbor, he was redirected to Vis island which at that time was yet unknown to allied airmen. Landing in afternoon on 2 May 1944, Freddy was greeted by black US soldier asking him how he likes the runway they have built and telling him he was the first one to land.
Remaining on island, Freddy carried out support mission across Yugoslavia until discharge after 60 combat missions.
After the war he married and with children visited Adriatic unsuccessfully attempting to visit Vis island once more which was now off limits since it was turned into Yugoslav military base.
Because of his wife's illness Freddy was unable to visit Vis during 90's and it was only after her death together with other British veterans when he finally managed to see Vis again.
