Biography

Born on 22 January 1899 in Žimarica/Sodražica near Ribnica, Kočevje (Gottschee), at that time part of Austro-Hungarian monarchy today Slovenia, in peasant family.

Completed Austro-Hungarian officer school and reconnaissance, fighter pilot school in Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

From 1941 served in Air Force of Independent state of Croatia while working with resistance until he defected to Yugoslav partisans in FL-3 aircraft on 21 October 1943. His family was executed because of it.

His name is sometimes written as Franjo Pirc and Franya Pirtz.
