Petar Milutin Kvaternik

( 1882? - 1941 )

Biography:

Brother of Slavko Kvaternik.

As reserve major Petar Kvaternik was military commander of Crikvenica town and on 10 April 1941 proclaimed Independent State of Croatia in Crikvenica after his brother did the same in Zagreb.

By orders from Zagreb (his brother?) he was named commander of Northern Naval Sector but attempt to assert his authority amongst naval officers resulted in navy captain Mirko Pleiweiss (Plajvajs), commander of Northern Naval Sector of Yugoslav Navy, taking detachment of sailors from Selce and arresting Kvaternik with his coconspirators in town’s postal office.

During night of 10/11 April as prisoners were being escorted shooting started supposedly when Petar Kvaternik attempted grab lieutenant Pekarcevic, commander of soldiers guarding them, and was shot in the head through the eye. Also killed in shooting was dr. Hajdin, local official, who informed captain Pleiweiss of Kvaternik actions.

Later body of Petar Milutin Kvaternik was moved to Zagreb and buried on 15 April.
