Marko Mesic
(1901 - 1948?)
Biography
Marko Mesic was born on 30 September 1901 in Bjelovar.
Before war he was officer of Yugoslav army and in 1941 he joins newly formed Croatian Home Defense.
As lieutenant-colonel Mesic was given command of 369th Artillery Battalion which as part of reinforced 369th Infantry Regiment (Verstarken Kroatischen Infanterie-Regiment 369) of German 100th Jaeger Division was destroyed at Stalingrad. In last days Mesic takes over command of regiment and was decorated with Iron Cross 1st Class. After surrender of German 6th Army, Marko Mesic and units survivors become POW.
Final faith of Marko Mesic remains unclear, according to some sources he placed as commander of 1st Yugoslav brigade in Soviet Union.
By other sources he remained POW and was extracted after war trailed and shot in 1947 or 1948.
In book 'Domovina je ena' by Alberta Kluna (Partizanska knjiga Ljubljana, 1986) mentions "colonel Marko Mesic in staff of Heavy motorized artillery brigade of 4th Army of YA which arrived from Russia to Serbia and after disbandment of other units was assigned this brigade. Differences between them was that he was only one wearing on his hat Red star with flag." He lived in Zagreb after the war and once jumped under a train losing both of his legs.
Serbian propaganda names Marko Mesic as bother or uncle of Stjepan Stipe Mesic but there is no evidence of that.
