Written by Mislav Miholek

At the begging of 1813, French Authorities planned to organize a Hussar Squadron filled with Croatian from Military Croatia. In February, plan changed and Croatian Hussar Regiment was formed (Regiment de hussards croates). In March, there were first 3 Hussar Squadrons organized, later another three. In August 1813, after training, the unit had 69 Officers, 1515 NCOs and soldiers with 1509 horses.

This unit never saw combat. It was trained in Karlovac and Ljubljana. In autumn, Regiment was based in Italy and in October finally got in Lyon. When Habsburg troops captured again Croatian land south of Sava river, unit disobeyed to take orders from French officers. On 25th November, Regiment was disarmed and became Labor unit. In March 1814, Croatians were finally free to leave France and they went to Croatia.
