Army Group B

Heeresgruppe B

History

Transferred from Greece in July 1943 were Germany expected Allied landings instead of Italy, took over control of German forces in Northern Italy, Austria, Southern Germany, Slovenia, Istria and Croatian Littoral up to Crikvenica. Its primary tasks were to guard against airborne landings, disarm Italian army and guard communication towards Germany and Austria. Second task was to organize coastline defense of Northern Adriatic.

After Italian capitulation group units disarmed 82 generals, 13000 officers, 402600 soldiers of which 183000 were transported to Third Reich by 20 September as military internees. Captured military equipment included: 1138 artillery pieces, 386 900 rifles, 5926 machine guns, 2558 mortars, 536 anti-tank guns, 797 anti-aircraft guns, 236 tanks and armored vehicles, 4053 horses and mules.

Army Group B carried out anti-partisan operations for crushing of popular uprising in Slovenia and Istria. Disbanded on November 21 with its responsibilities taken over by Army Group C.
