History

First parts of the division arrived in Zagreb on 31 October 1942. Initial strength of only 2594 soldiers and officers increased to 11408 on 20 February 1943 and 12938 on 20 May. Division tasks were anti-partisan warfare and protecting of vital Zagreb - Belgrade railroad as well as other local railroad towards Hungary and Bosnia.

In 1944 reformed as 42nd Jäger Division.

War crimes

  • On 25 February 1943 after pushing out Partisans 16th Brigade from village of OÅ¡tri Zid, division commander ordered reprisals to be carried out against civilians resulting in execution of 31 civilians including 1 women and 1 child - 25 Croats, 5 Serbs and 4 Hungarians, burning of 23 houses and 50 barns and other objects. Among killed were Jovo Vezmar, Todor Popović, Ivan Å etida, Marin Kućan (resistance collaborator), Mate Vlajnić (his son Ivan-Ican was know Ustasha).
