612th Naval Artillery Battalion

History

Formed in Toulon, France in May 1943. In September 1943 battalion was moved to Herceg Novi at the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro at the time under the Seekommandant Albanien. In March 1944 it was moved again moved to Dubrovnik under the Seekommandant Dalmatien, then to Seekommandant Süddalmatien.

Deployed batteries from Split to Cavtat. In October 1944 reformed as Naval Rifle Battalion (Marineschützenbataillon) Wachtel and transported on 17 October by ships to Slano with task of opening road towards Metković which was cut near Neum by units of 26th Dalmatian division. About 500 soldiers managed to breakthrough as part of KG Becker which was largely destroyed in Battle of Vukov Klanac.
