Operation ADLER
Unternehmen Adler (Eagle)
History
Initially operation called for German forces to secure Adriatic coastline from Rijeka to Zadar. Plans for operation Adler were drawn during October and initially involved 114th Jäger Division, units of Army Group B advancing from Rijeka region, parts of 3rd SS Panzer Corps and Police Regiment 14, this was changed to 373rd Division and Gospić garrison securing coastline from Karlobag to Novi in Adler I while 114th and 392nd divisions would clear Lika and islands around Zadar in Adler II. Also 371st was considered for operation at one point. Another plan called for 114th Division which was suppose to advance towards Gospić and Karlobag and from there towards OtoÄac and Novi in order to secure coastline.
During October it become clear to Yugoslav Partisans that direct assault on Gospić garrison was becoming less possible each days as initial shock of Italian capitulation passed away and German reinforcements trickled into the region so it was decided to keep it under blockade leaving only airdrops as way to supply the garrison. At the same time Tito decided to form 1st Proletarian Corps for advance into Serbia and requested best unit from Croatia, 6th Lika Division which was used to block Gospić, to be sent to Bosnia. To replace 6th Lika Division, one division from Slovenia was ordered but operation Wolkenburch prevented this and instead 13th Division was ordered to send its units to positions around Perušić and 19th Division to send one brigade to southern Lika. Departure of 6th Lika Division and arrival of German 264th Infantry Division allowed for 114th Division to be used in several operations to push back Partisans.
Because of lack of forces operation seems to have divided into several smaller operations:
Orders of Battle
- Axis ORBAT
- NOVJ ORBAT
