Operation BETA

Italian second phase of joint Axis offensive codenamed Operation "DINARA" against liberated territory in central Bosnia.

Attack started on October 21st 1942 with parts of Italian XVIII Corps, Ustasha Black Legion and parts of Chetnik Dinara Division from directions of Kupres, Sujica, Duvno, Imotski, Sinj and Vrlika - total of 12-14 battalions - with goal of capturing liberated territory around Livno.

While 1st Dalmatian brigade and 3rd partisan detachment of the 4th Operational Zone of partisan detachments of Croatia successfully halted five Italian and Chetniks columns, breakthrough was made by two Ustasha battalions from Kupres on October 3rd across undefended mountains Cincar and Krug surprising parts of 4th Operation Zone of partisan detachments of Croatia and captured Livno forcing partisans to withdraw towards Kamesnica mountain and Glamoc.

On October 26th, by orders of Supreme Headquarters of NOP i DV of Yugoslavia, started three day counterattack of 1st and 2nd Proletarian and 4th Krajina brigade against parts of Italian 12th Infantry Division 'Sassari' and Chetnik Dinara Division in order to neutralize enemy offensive. Because of slow and uncompleted grouping of forces element of surprise was lost and counterattack failed, although Assault group did capture village Strmica and broken Chetniks on the outer defense of Bosansko Grahovo and inflicted significant losses on Italian-Chetnik fortified garrison.
