Operation BRAUNSCHWEIG

(Operation Brunswick)

History

German anti-partisan operation carried out by 278th Infantry Division together with 188th Division from 26th April to 6th May 1944 in northern Istria, in area of Kastav, Čičarija, Podgrad and Brkina against 1st Istrian Brigade 'Vladimir Gortan', 1st Istrian partisan detachment and Slovene Istrian partisan detachment. 278th division participated in war crime in village Lipe near Rijeka (Fiume) in which 263 civilians were murdered and village burned.
