Goilo operation
(Gojilska operacija)
History
In order to spread Partisan activities to northern and central Croatia, General Staff of Croatia sent 1st Slavonian and Banija partisan detachments to Moslavina to reinforce Moslavina detachment and carry out large scale attacks.
The choice for their first target fell on Goilo which had important oil and natural gas field which Germans were exploiting and increasing prewar production of 100 tons. Village and pumping station were defended by company of Croatian Home Defense totaling 170 soldiers, reinforced German platoon of 50 and around 20 ustasha and Gendarmerie together with local Germans.
On 6 September 1942 attack was carried out, oil wells and 23 towers were torched and virtually all installations were destroyed.
Aftermath
Goilo operation followed by other Partisan attacks which were becoming stronger forced NDH authorities to redeploy 1st and 4th Brigade of the 1st Mountain Division from Bosnia to central Croatia, Moslavina and western Slavonia.
