Operation ŠEKOVIĆI

Podhvat Šekovići

Intro

NDH anti-partisan operation in area of Šekovići, eastern Bosnia.

History

As result of breakout of main group of Yugoslav Partisan divisions from encirclement at Sutjeska in operation SCHWARZ in direction of eastern Bosnia NDH garrisons in the area would soon be faced with serious threat. To secure rear area against attacks from local Partisans operation was ordered by German 369th Division to 3rd Home Defense Corps to clear Birač mountain.

Operation

Begun on 6 June.

On 8 June, Partisans decided to avoid main NDH forces and instead slip out of loose encirclement and attack Srebrenica which was lightly defended since most of the garrison troops were used in the operation against Šekovići. Srebrenica was overrun on night 11/12 June forcing pause in operation in order to clear Partisans who regrouped and returned to Šekovići.

3rd Corps ordered operation to continue on 12 June but arrival of Proletarian divisions from south forced operation to finally be canceled and order to regroup and abandon all NDH garrisons smaller then company.

Aftermath

Despite quick regrouping Ustashe 9th, 21st, 28th and 29th Active Service battalions were overrun and destroyed.

Partisan counter offensive in eastern Bosnia forced Germans to commit 369th and 7th SS divisions to new operation in July.
