During Belgrade operation, corps was ordered on 9 October to complete crossings over Great Morava river by 11 October and cross river during night of 12 October. At the time of crossing corps strength was at 17 022 soldiers equipped with:
- 160 tanks
- 21 self-propelled artillery guns
- 31 armored cars
- 366 guns and mortars
- 674 machine guns
- 15710 rifles and submachine-guns
- 49 motorcycles
- 1038 vehicles
- 130 radios
Crossing began in the afternoon of 11 October in area of Donje Livadice with tanks, vehicles and artillery using 30 tons bridge captured from Germans while heavy self-propelled artillery guns transferred with pontoons. German attempts to bombard the bridge failed and by morning of 12 October entire Corps crossed the river and passing through lines of 68th Rifle Corps began its advance towards Belgrade.
Advancing north in two groups, Corps reached Danube on 13 October cutting off German formations (mostly 1st Mountain Division) in Požarevac-Smederevo area which were trying to halt advance of 75th Rifle Corps and Partisans 25th Division. Corps linked up with Partisan 1st Proletarian Corps on 12 October in area of Natalinaca, 12 km east of Topola. 36th Guard Tank Regiment arrived in time to support Partisans who were attacking Topola from the West, surprised Soviet attack coming in from the East collapsed German defense forcing them to retreat towards Belgrade and completing encirclement of Belgrade from the south.
