On 5 November 1944 division received order to carry out reconnaissance in force of the right bank of Danube river in area of Apatin in preparation for Batina operation. Colonel SiÄev, division commander, chose single infantry battalion of the 360th Rifle Regiment supported by regimental artillery and mortars.
Leading first group of recon and engineer troops during night of 7 November was senior sergeant Mihail Abdulov using small fishing boats. German defenses failed to open fire until boats were only 10 meters from shore which allowed recon to neutralize machine gun nests and capture 20 Germans.
Second group was 1st Company with battalion commander captain Bešanov which come under fire in the middle of the river and Bešanov boat was soon damaged and begun to sink forcing him and his soldiers to reach opposite shore by swimming through icy cold water. Fortifying in captured trenches they managed to repulse four counterattacks on the following day.
Third group left to captain BeÅ¡anov landed another group lead by 2nd Lieutenant Petar GeorgijeviÄ Kosenkov which was faced by three counterattacks. His group was joined by senior sergeant Nikolaj IvanoviÄ Pozevalkin, commander of mortar section which neutralized one anti-tank weapon and five machine-gun nests with fire from his mortar.
Following day rest of the battalion landed to reinforce three small bridgeheads of Bešanov, Abdulov and Kosenkov which after being merged into single one begun to expand and advance through swampy and forested terrain towards main German defensive line on Danube levee, east of Carna.
In order to ease their advance, colonel SiÄev ordered LtColonel Suharnikov, commander of 109th Rifle Regiment to create another bridgehead north of Apatin. Landing detachment was lead by lieutenant Ivan GeorgijeviÄ MjeÅ¡kov, although surprise failed new bridgehead was established but it too become bogged down in muddy terrain.
Advance of both regiments come to a halt when they reached Danube old riverbed on which levee Germans built their main defensive line of earth-wooden bunkers with concrete cupolas that could only be destroyed with heavy weapons which were impossible to bring through muddy ground. Simultaneous reconnaissance landings carried out by 233rd Rifle Division around Batina run into even heavier resistance and were almost annihilated.
