4th Kordun Assault Brigade

(Četvrta kordunaška udarna brigada)

Formed on 19 August 1942 on Debela Kosa from two assault battalions from 1st and 2nd Kordun partisan detachments and Youth battalion "Joza Vlahovic". First formed as 3rd People's Liberation brigade of Croatia but by decision of General Staff Croatia from 14 September 1942 renamed as 4th Assault Brigade of NOV Croatia (also known as 1st Kordun bde). At the moment of forming brigade had 900 fighters. For first commander Nikola Vidovic was named and for political commissar Mile Martinovic.

On 22 August brigade crossed river Kupa near Desnih Stefanka and started its combat path into Pokuplje, Zumberak and Bela Krajina from where it returned after one month.

  • 26 August on the way to Zumberak brigade carried out successful attack on Jastrebasko and liberated from Ustasha concentration camp 727 children from Kozara, Kordun and Banija. Also brigade captured 20 Home Defence soldiers and seized 43 rifles, 2000 rounds and other equipment.
  • 31 August brigade attacked railway station in Draganici and stops at Lazinu and Domagovice, inflicting losses on the enemy, destroying the railway tracks, telegraph-telephone pools and several railway installations. Brigade captured 7 Home Defence soldiers and seized 10 rifles, 1000 rounds, 18 hand grandees and other equipment.
