2nd Macedonian Brigade

History

Yugoslav Partisans 2nd Macedonian Brigade was formed on 20 December 1943 from battalions of the 3rd Operational Zone which was disbanded. Forming was carried out in highly ceremonial way in presences of 1st Macedonian-Kosovo Brigade, units of Greek People's Liberation Army - ELAS, representatives of Supreme Headquarters, representatives of Greek and Bulgarian people's liberation movements as well as large members of Central Committee of the Communist Party of Macedonia and General Staff of Macedonia.

On the day of the forming brigade had around 320 fighters armed with:

  • ~250 rifles
  • ~15 light machine-guns
  • ~25 submachine-guns
  • ~50 pistols
  • ~200 hand grandees

From 4 to 11 January Brigade was target by anti-partisan operation carried out by 4th SS Police Division and other units of 81st Corps but was warned in time by EAM intelligence network.

On 24 April, 1st Army ordered 5th, 6th, 42nd and 48th divisions to cross Ilova river between Kočanica and Uljanik in ordered to attack unknown enemy defense which were part of Zvonimir defensive line held by German 21st Corps which just retreated from Bosnia.

In order to relive pressure from attacking Yugoslav divisions and eliminate their bridgehead across Ilova on 28 April German 7th SS Division carried out flanking attack into rear of Yugoslav bridgehead while German 369th and Croatian 1st and 9th attacked frontally.

2nd Brigade come under attack from both front and back with both flanks exposed. 2nd Battalion reinforced with 45mm anti-tank guns and anti-tank rifles took positions near village Kajgana in order to prevent attacks by units of 7th SS Division. Brigade suffered 31 soldiers and 3 officers killed, 207 soldiers and 7 officers wounded, while 8 soldiers were missing. It also lost 30 rifles, 19 submachine-guns, 10 pistols, 2 anti-tank guns 45mm, 2 mortars 82mm, 2 heavy machine-guns and other.

On 15 May 1945 Brigade encountered retreating Ustasha column which took cover on Bohor mountain (k.863). On the following day after short battle and negotiations 1315 Ustasha surrendered while 176 were killed and 55 wounded. Loot included 882 rifles, 72 light machine-guns, 188 submachine-guns, 142 pistols, 1 mortar 82mm and other equipment. Brigade suffered 1 killed and 4 wounded fighters which were its last casualties of the war.
