Zagreb partisan detachment

(Zagrebački partizanski odred)

History

First detachment was formed in the beginning of July 1941 out of 20 soldiers from members of Communist party and Communist Youth which have escaped from Kerestinac prison camp. At first it stays in house of Slavko Gmanjic in Dubrava (Zagreb suburb) , later it moves in forest Divjaca near Sesvete where camp is set up. Detachments stays in area until 21 August when Gendarmerie patrol finds them, in skirmish which occurred one Gendarmerie officer was killed. After that detachment is split in half, first half moves back to Zagreb underground while second half moves to Bilogora, fighting Gendarmerie and Ustasha on the way, where it joins Bilogora partisan group ending existence of first Zagreb partisan detachment.

On 13 September 1943, based on recommendation by Zagreb District Committee of Communist Party of Croatia, Headquarters of 2nd Operational Zone issued order to from Zagreb partisan detachment from Dugo Selo, Prigorje and Stubica companies and all other partisans groups in the area.

Forming of detachment actually begun on 18 September 1943 in village Preseka where 2nd Battalion was formed and continued on 19 September in village Hruscica where 1st Battalion was formed. Prigorje company remained as independent company under direct command of detachment HQ until early October 1943 when it become 3rd Battalion.

Officially at the moment of the forming detachment had:

  • 272 fighters (6 females)
  • 159 rifles
  • 8 light machine-guns
  • 7950 bullets

Unofficially detachment had more the 500 fighters but number was lowered to prevent higher HQ's from transferring extra troops to other units - report to General Staff of NOV Croatia mentions detachments having only 150 fighters!

2nd and 3rd Battalion, each with around 200 fighters, on 15 December left detachment to join Matija Gubec Brigade. New 2nd Battalion is formed in second half of January 1944, 3rd Battalion was formed again 20 September 1944. On 28 September 1944, entire 2nd Battalion joins 1st Zagorje Brigade, around 200 fighters and 3rd Battalion becomes 2nd Btn. 3rd, now 2nd Btn, joins 1st Zagorje Brigade with around 220 fighters on 15 November 1944.
