22nd Serbian Division
(Dvadesetdruga srpska divizija)
History
Division took part in breakthrough of Syrmian front, it was deployed along Bosut and SpaÄva river facing German 1230th Regiment of the 41st Infantry Division on the opposite bank. Division lacked artillery necessary for such operation and to make matters worse it was ordered to begun it assault at 23:00 on 11 April 1945, 6 hours before all other divisions would start their attack in order to draw away enemy reserves.
Although initial landings surprised Germans allowing 22nd Division to create bridgehead and transfer its 8th Brigade across Bosut with little casualties advance was quickly halted by main German defense and artillery which due to lack of activities on other sectors of the front entirely redirect against 8th Brigade followed by four counterattacks pushing brigade back to river bank. German general retreat finally halted German artillery and infantry.
In its last battle division suffered horrendous casualties, initial report claimed 325 Germans killed and 250 captured while suffering 170 killed and over 643 wounded , later more accurate figure of 301 killed was reached while number of wounded was probably also much higher.
