30th Slovenian Division
(Trideseta slovenska divizija)
History
Thirtieth Slovenian Division of Yugoslav partisans was formed on 6 October 1943 as Goriska or Gorizia Division. On 17 October 1943 it was renamed into the 27th Goriska Division NOVJ followed by 32nd Division on 22 December 1943 and at the end of January 1944 it was finally renamed into the 30th Slovenian Division NOVJ. At the time of formation in October 1943, the division consisted of the following brigades:
- Goriska Brigade
- Simon Gregoric Brigade
- 1st Soca/Isonzo Brigade
2nd and 3rd Soca/Isonzo Brigade joined division while first two brigades left division with three Soca/Isonzo brigades being renamed leaving division with new formation until end of the war:
- 17th Slovenian Brigade "Simon Gregoric"
- 18th Slovenian Brigade "Bazoviska Brigade"
- 19th Slovenian Brigade "Srecko Kosol"
Division was part of 9th Slovenian Corps NOVJ during entire war.
Division operated until the end of 1943 in Upper Posocje region (Gornje Posocje). In January 1944 it operated in Banjscice plateau and in Trnovski Gozd and in February 1944 went on march in Beneska Slovenia. In first half of March 1944 it attacked German communication lines in Upper Soca Valley and along communications directed towards NW Gorenjska. After that it operated in Cerkljanska region, around Idrija and in Vipava Valley. In June 1944 took part in corps demolishion operation against railway road in Baska Grapa and in July it again operated in Trnovski Gozd and Cerkljanska region. In August 1944 was engaged in some battles in Vipava Valley. After that it operated ocasionally in Kras region, Gornje Posocje or around Cepovan and Trnovo, where operated till the January 1945. In February and March 1945 it was engaged in some heavy battles in Trnovski Gozd, especially during last German offensive against units of 9th Corps NOVJ in second half of March 1945. At the beginning of April 1945 managed to break through from German encirclement with quite big casualties. At the end of April 1945 it took part in final battles for liberation of Yugoslavia and on 1 May 1945 participated in attack on Opicine (Opcine, today in Italy) and in battles for liberation of Trieste. On 3 May 1945 was the 30th Division NOVJ disbanded and its units were incorporated/transfered among KNOJ units.
