(Odsek-odeljenje zaštite naroda / Department-section for people protection )
Security organization formed during the war for counterintelligence duties - protection of people and NOV i POJ units from enemy influence and actions. Formed in September 1943 by Supreme Commander as section. Taken over duties of Commission for fighting fifth-column formed April 1943 at General Staff. On May 13th 1944, by order of Supreme Commander, section is transferred into department for protection of the people at Committee for people's defense of National Committee for liberation of Yugoslavia. By this OZNA has become central security organization covering entire Yugoslavia. In the beginning OZNA was mostly doing intelligence work gathering information's for operational units, later it was more orientated to fighting spy's and fifth-column.
