264th Infantry Division

264. Infanterie-Division

History

Formed in France and Belgium between June and August 1943 as reserve division of Army Group D.

After capitulation of Italy it was transferred to Yugoslavia during September and October 1943 arriving first to Croatia in area around Zagreb moved to Dalmatia to serve under 15th Mountain Corps. Tasked with coastal defense of Dalmatia it was reinforced by 944th Army Coastal Artillery Regiment in December 1943 followed by 1st Regiment of the Brandenburg Division and 92nd Motorized Brigade in January 1944 as well as other smaller army and naval units plus various Ustasha and Chetnik formations. Brandenburg and 92nd Brigade left late August and early September for Belgrade leaving 264th Division alone again.

Division carried out numerous anti-partisans operations on Dalmatian mainland and surrounding islands, organized coastal defense in case of Allied landing.

During German withdrawal from Dalmatia in operation HERBSTGEWITTER, division was suppose to withdraw from Dalmatia and redeploy on Syrmian front leaving defense of Knin to 373rd Division. But under pressure from Yugoslav Partisans 8th Dalmatian Corps, division manged to carry out orderly retreat only from Zadar and Split towards Šibenik. While most of the division managed to take defensive positions first around Drniš and finally Knin, KG Alermann suffered heavy losses during retreat from Šibenik.

Taking advantage of 10 day regrouping of Yugoslav Partisans from 15 to 25 November for Knin Operation, 1st and 2nd Battalion of the 892nd Regiment were transferred to Syrmia and Osijek region. Rest of the division was almost completely destroyed with only 1526 soldiers left.
