114th Jäger Division

114. Jäger-Division

History

Created in 1943 by reorganizing 714th Infantry Division.

During Italian capitulation division took control of Zemunik airfield and port city of Zadar, preventing Partisans from acquiring weapons from Italian 18th Corps. Corps commander, general Umbero Spigo was forced to capitulate faced by threats made by colonel Laumann. Major Teissl was made in charge of occupation of Zadar while captain Strozer took control of Zemunik. Around 3000 German soldiers disarmed and took as prisoners without any resistance around 10000 soldiers of Zara division.

On 15 September 1943, surprise landing attempt was made on Preko on Ugljan island just before noon. German convoy was lead by motor boat armed with machine-gun followed at some distance by several fishing boats and with three aircraft above. Leading motor boat hoisted a white flag but this didn't fool local Partisan militia, around 30 strong, which opened fire on the leading boat when it was only 50 meters from shore disabling it engine with boat drifting to the shore. Out of 18 crew members, 7 where dead and remaining 11 taken prisoner some of them wounded. Partisans suffered two wounded while citizens of Preko suffered 27 killed and 7 lightly wounded during retaliatory bombing and artillery shelling from mainland.

On 30 September, by which time Partisans organized 200 strong battalion, commander of 721st Jager Regiment decided to carry out personal reconnaissance for possible landing attempt but ran into ambush between Ugljan and Ošljak islands resulting in deaths of LtColonel Klensberg, commander of the 721st Jager Regiment, captain Schaff, commander of the 2nd Battalion, major Konjicki, commander of the 2nd Battery/661st Artillery Regiment, two 2nd Lieutenants, and colonel doctor of 721st Regiment.
