Operation PFINGSTEN

(Unternehmen Pfingsten / Operation Pentecost / Operacija Duhovi)

History

During operation SCHWARZ, Partisan units across Yugoslavia received orders to constantly attack enemy in order to relive pressure from surrounded Partisan Main group around Tito and prevent Germans to send reinforcements once breakthrough was made. This resulted in quick action by 5th Kozara brigade which at Vijačana village near Prnjavor captured two companies of Home Defense soldiers from 2nd Battalion of the 1st Infantry Regiment together with three 100mm howitzers and 600 shells, besides 150 rifles, 25000 rounds of ammo, 8 light and 3 heavy machine-guns and 1 mortar.

Combat in Prnjavor area continued on 4 and 5 June 1943 forcing Staff of 114th Jäger Division to form Combat group Huwe from 721st Regiment reinforced with NDH and Chetnik formations supported by artillery battalion and air force to attack and destroy 5th Kozara Brigade. KG Huwe was defeated on slopes of Ljubić mountain resulting in need for larger scale anti-partisan operation.

Operation

Under command of 114th Division, general Karl Egleseer, operation begun on 13 June at 5:00 with around 12000 German, NDH and Chetnik soldiers advancing from Derventa, Prnjavor, Kotor-Varoš and Teslić against area of Vršani village - Vijačani village - Kokori village - Uzlomac mountain - Maslovare village in order to surround and destroy 12th Krajina division (later renamed 11th).

Partisans avoided advancing columns and escaped from encirclement.

Casualties

Partisans claimed 90 Germans killed while capturing two MG-34/42 and one heavy machine-gun.

Aftermath

Chetniks believing Partisans suffered heavy losses returned to area between Vrbanja and Vrbas only to be attacked on 24 June by 5th and 12th Krajina brigades and Banja Luka detachment which chased them to Banja Luka.
