Operation RISNJAK

(Operacija Risnjak)

Large operation involving 12,000 soldiers of Italian 5th Corps launched on July 12th 1942 against 2nd Partisan Detachment and liberated areas of Croatian Littoral and Gorski Kotar.

Goal of offensive was to either destroy or capture all unprotected Croatian villages in order to cut-off partisan supply lines and manpower. Several hundred houses where burned and several thousand people where either killed or sent to interment camps.

Unlike standard Italian practice of moving along roads using heavy equipment and air support to advance, with a help of collaborators and deserters from partisan units, Italian troops started attacking through rough rocky and forested terrain and managed to launch surprise attacks on partisan camps and combat units including 1st Proletarian battalion.
