Osijek Assault Brigade

(Osječka udarna brigada)

History

Formed on 1 March 1944 near village Slobodna Vlast in Slavonia. Fought in Slavonia and Podravina, first as part of 12th Slavonian division and later 51st Vojvodina division. In final operations of Yugoslav army participated in liberation of Osijek into which brigade entered on 14 April 1945 and several places in Podravina.

On the night of 12/13 November 1944, brigade attacked German 2nd Police Battalion in Piškorevci, 5 kilometers south of Đakovo securing traffic between Đakovo-Slavonski Brod and partially Šamac and Vinkovci. Attack started around midnight and lasted until 16:00 when entire battalion was destroyed, battalion commander committed suicide with battalion suffering 399 killed out which 8 officers and 26 NCO's. Only 4 Germans were captured along with 31 light machine-guns, 260 rifles, 200000 rounds of ammo and other equipment. Osijek brigade suffered 22 killed and 77 wounded. Amongst killed were Ivan Vinoviški, Branko Vujačić, Jefim Kodošev (Novosibirsk Region, USSR), Andrija Kulundžić, Petricio Virgilio (Avelino, Italy), Vladimir Slezovjev (Smolensk, USSR), Tomo Slišković, Mijo Trupkvić and Ivan Hamek. After battle was over brigade commander Milivoj Babac Obilić was killed by bullet which come from three Germans hiding in stack of straw, all three were killed in short firefight.
