2nd Tank Brigade

(Druga tenkovska brigada)

The group that left for retraining to the USSR was trained on Tesnickoje polygon (north of Tula). The 2nd Tank Brigade was formed from this group on March 8, 1945. A structure of this brigade corresponded to the structure of Soviet tank brigade. It had 3 tank battalions with two companies each, each company had 3 platoons with 3 tanks each and a tank of commander of company. Altogether this brigade had 1150 men and its equipment consisted of 65 T-34/85 tanks, 3 BA-64 armored cars and other machinery.

The task of the 2nd Tank brigade as part of 1st Army of JA was to breakthrough Axis defense line on Syrmia front. The 1st and 3rd Tank battalions were prepared in the direction of attack on Vinkovci and the 2nd Tank battalion was on the auxiliary direction against Brčko. The attack started on April 12, 1945 and tank units penetrated to Vukovar and then to Vinkovci. The struggles were very hard and the Yugoslavs lost 14 tanks and 1 armored vehicle. Nine tanks were damaged.

Brigade entered in Zagreb on 9 May as part of 3rd Army of JA and advanced to Trst were it joined 1st Tank Brigade.
