History

Formed on 9 November 1942 as 1st Bosnian Corps with the 4th and 5th divisions and 6th East Bosnian Brigade. Also commanded Partisan detachments on territory of Bosnia which was its operational area. By order of Supreme Headquarters of NOV i POJ it was divided on 1st and 2nd Bosnian Corps. 1st Bosnian Corps was renamed 3rd Corps of NOVJ and fought in eastern Bosnia. 3rd Corps had at first only 17th Eastern Bosnian Division and all Partisan detachments on territory of eastern Bosnia, later 27th Eastern Bosnian and 38th Bosnian division were added and in operational terms 16th and 36th Vojvodina divisions.

First commander was Kosta Nađ and political commissar Osman Karabegović replaced by Vladimir Popović on 5 October 1943.

During final operations of JA it participated in Sarajevo operation and in destruction of Main Chetnik Group on Neretva, Sutjeska and Romanija.
