History
After World War I, Italy was rewarded with parts of Adriatic coast of former Austro-Hungarian monarchy including Istria, city of Zadar/Zara and several islands although it had even bigger aspirations leading to war with Greece which in the end engulfed Yugoslavia into WW2. Forced Italianization of Slavic population before the war and on occupied territory during the war only helped to strengthen communist resistance which favored attacking Italians.
