21st Slavonian Brigade

(21. slavonska NO udarna brigada)

History

In aftermath of operation BRAUN and battle of Šušnjara Partisans were left with huge amount of captured weapons and war material which allowed expansion of existing and formation of new units, one of which was 21st brigade.

Order for formation of twenty-first slavonian brigade was issued on 17 May 1943 in village Orljevac near Slavonska Požega, also on the same day brigade become part of the newly formed 10th Slavonian Division which on 17 October was renamed 28th Slavonian division. On the day of the forming brigade had 630 fighters armed with 480 rifles, 27 light machine guns, 4 heavy machine guns, 1 heavy and 1 light mortar.

Brigade fought in Slavonia, and took part in Ludbreg operation after which it was sent to Zagorje where it intercepted Swedish ambassador in NDH, Hugo Baldenae Wahlin and his wife with five other persons all of who were escorted to Staff of Second operational zone.

In September brigade had 1075 fighter out of which 117 women armed with:

  • 505 carbine (Mauser) rifles with 15360 rounds of ammo
  • 31 Mannlicher rifles with 850 rounds of ammo
  • 2 submachine guns with 100 rounds of ammo
  • 20 light machine guns with 10285 rounds of ammo
  • 7 machine guns with 2600 rounds of ammo
  • 112 light hand grandees
  • 162 heavy hand grandees
  • 69 pistols with 347 rounds of ammo
  • 1 light mortar with 9 shells
  • 1 heavy mortar with 9 shells
  • 1 gun with 29 shells
  • 1 anti tank rifle with 74 rounds
  • 1 anti tank machine gun with 1000 rounds
  • 10 raiding horses
  • 35 pack horses
  • 7 draught horses

Brigade was first unit to enter Zagreb (Turopolje-Posavina partisan detachment was first to infiltrate the city but lacked strength to neutralize few remaining strongholds).

In 1947, brigade was renamed 43rd Regiment of 28th Division located in Novo Mesto and on the following year become 133th Regiment of the 60th Division in Maribor.
