1st Army

of Yugoslav Partisans and Yugoslav Army

Formed on 1 January 1945 with 1st Proletarian Assault and 6th Proletarian "Nikola Tesla", 5th, 11th, and 12th Assault divisions and 1st Cavalry Brigade and from 23 March Engineer Brigade. On 3 April, the 42th and 48th Assault division, 2nd Proletarian and 17th Assault were added to the 1st Army followed on 7 April by 22nd division and 2nd Tank Brigade. Commander was Peko Dapčević and political commissar Mijalko Todorović. Units of the 1st Army carried out breakthrough of Syrmian Front and in final operations of JA participated in liberation of Slavonija, Croatia and Slovenia.
